There is nothing that influences society more than fashion. It is the fashion designer who creates new masterpieces every other day, making people pre-disposed to be in style. It is basically the twentieth century that saw the maximum number of fashion designers in the fashion world, spinning out dresses and outfits to make a statement in women’s fashion.
The 1900s brought a change in women’s fashion where the dustcoat was included in women’s apparel as protection from the dirt of the road. It was in the 1920s that there was a change in women’s fashion with the Jazz age producing flapper style that comes with long pearls and short and simple fringed dresses.
With the Depression, there was a great change in women’s fashion when material was no longer a luxury item as women wore what they found, and could afford. Women started following fashion of movie stars in the 1930s while the 1940s brought with it uniform like sophistication which included padded shoulders, a close tailored look and short skirts.
The 1950s brought the return of the full skirt and cinched in waists; and this was when women were greatly influenced by Hollywood. Women wanted to look like Marilyn Monroe and thus patterned their clothing accordingly. The 60s made women’s fashion very colorful when the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy greatly influenced women with her unique dressing sense.
The 1970s emphasized more about being loose and comfortable with bell bottom pants and tie dye getting introduced in women’s fashion. With disco gaining popularity in the 1980s, young girls preferred following Madonna’s style of leggings, headbands, bracelets and off the shoulder sweatshirts. The 1990s brought with it a completely different look with more emphasis to sophistication. This was the beginning of the decade and the ever popular acid wash jeans.
So it can be seen that women’s fashion has undergone much change over the years, and it is possible to conclude that women’s fashion does have a great influence on the culture of the women of a generation.
